Lingual braces
Invisible yet effective
What are lingual braces?
Lingual braces are one of the most discreet orthodontic treatment methods available. This is because the brackets and archwires are fitted to the back surface of your teeth so no-one can see them. This doesn’t make them any less effective though. Based on the traditional method used by metal braces, lingual braces get great results for all our patients with the added bonus of not being visible.
How do lingual braces work?
Lingual braces work just like metal braces do. The archwires are threaded through the brackets and apply gentle pressure to guide your teeth into position. The brackets are small so fit comfortably and securely to the inner surface of your teeth, though it may take a couple of days for you to get accustomed to wearing them. During this time you may notice your speech is affected slightly but this won’t last long.
Benefits of lingual braces
- Aesthetically pleasing orthodontic treatment option
- Patients don’t need to feel self-conscious about wearing braces
- Ideal for adult patients who don’t want treatment to interfere with their lifestyle
Lingual braces FAQs
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
The length of time you will need to wear braces depends on your case, not on the type of braces you wear. After your initial consultation, we can advise you on how long we believe you will need to wear braces.
Am I too old for braces?
No-one is too old for braces or orthodontic treatment. While it is true younger jaws are more malleable (which is why orthodontic treatment during teenage years is so common), teeth can be corrected at any age.
What happens if my braces break?
It is very uncommon for braces to break during treatment; however, it can happen and is usually a result of eating hard or sticky foods, or chewing on things like pencils or fingernails. If a bracket comes loose or an archwire breaks, we will provide you with information on what to do while waiting for an emergency appointment.
